We enjoy our après ski and it’s a critical part of our annual ski trips to Austria. However, what we discovered a number of years ago is that white sunglasses when worn both inside and outside improve your après experience.

Most skiers wear some form of eye protection during the day, whether that is googles or sunglasses. The Irish team have taken this a step further and we now our white sunglasses off the mountain as well. We found that by wearing the glasses we were often encouraged on to the dance floor by others; got served drinks very quickly at the bar and generally had a very good time. The only downside is that in a smokey environment and with disco lighting, it was sometimes difficult to manoeuvre among the other partygoers and get to the toilets etc., however, that never stopped us from trying!

The colour of the sunglasses is quite important in adding to the après experience as one of our most senior team members, Professor Peter Hamilton discovered after a hard day up the mountain. Peter hadn’t realised that he was wearing his white sunglasses, when suddenly he was beckoned on to the stage to sing an impromptu après party song. The white sunglasses were of an early 1980s design and they stole the show; unfortunately, Peter’s signing and air guitar didn’t match the quality and impact of the glasses.

From that first night, it became the norm to wear white sunglasses during après and the fun and experience in wearing them has never abated. The designs have evolved over the years as many a pair were damaged and/or gifted in the heat of the moment. However, the future still looks bright for our white sunglasses and après time in Austria.

In our next blog we will discuss how the glasses can be augmented with other suitable attire to bring out the white rims and add to the après party experience.
